Besides the beaches, the area is perfect for exploring nearby coastal trails with sweeping views of the sea. In the evening, enjoy fresh seafood at local tavernas, offering traditional Greek cuisine by the waterfront. Within walking distance you will find shops for your groceries and daily needs for a pleasant stay. A short 30-min drive takes you to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, where you can watch one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Greece, with the ancient ruins providing a dramatic backdrop. The proximity to Athens (a 50-min drive) also makes it easy to take a day trip to explore the city's rich history and vibrant culture before returning to the peaceful retreat of Lagonisi. About a 40-minute drive northeast of Lagonisi, the Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron (Vravrona) is an important ancient religious site dedicated to the goddess Artemis, protector of young girls and women. This sanctuary was once a major pilgrimage site in ancient Greece, dating back to the 8th century BCE. Visitors can explore the temple ruins, the sacred spring, and the impressive stone bridge. There is also a small on-site museum showcasing artifacts and votive offerings dedicated to Artemis. Just a 20-minute drive from Lagonisi, the Ancient Theatre of Thorikos is one of the oldest surviving theatres in Greece, dating back to the 6th century BCE. This site, nestled near Lavrio, offers a glimpse into ancient Greek culture, as it was part of a settlement that thrived due to the nearby silver mines. Visitors can explore the theatre, the remnants of the town, and the surrounding landscape, which holds evidence of prehistoric settlement as well. Close to the ancient theatre, the Temple of Demeter at Thorikos is another hidden gem. Dedicated to the goddess of agriculture and fertility, this lesser-known site offers a quiet and peaceful visit, surrounded by rural scenery. The temple was part of the larger Thorikos site, which was once an important city in the region of Lavreotiki. Lavrion, just 20 minutes from Lagonisi, is known for its ancient silver mines, which played a crucial role in the prosperity of Athens during the classical period. The Lavrion Archaeological Museum houses a collection of artifacts related to mining activities, tools, and everyday objects from the region’s long history. Exploring the ancient mining tunnels and learning about the extraction processes offers a unique glimpse into the industrial history of ancient Greece.
