The Neighborhood:
Salamina is the largest Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, about two kilometres (one nautical mile) from the coast of Athen's port of Piraeus and about 16 km west of Athens center.
On the eastern side of the island is it's main port, Paloukia, connects the island with Perama in the western part of Athens urban area through a frequent ferry line and is the second largest port in Greece in terms of passengers, after the port of Piraeus.
It is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway near Athens.
It has rich nature and enough beaches to relax and explore. As it is not particularly touristy, you will find relatively cheap accommodation. The island also has several places for entertainment and good food.
**Some of our favorite beaches in Salamina are:
- Batsi: located on the north side of the island, at the foot of a pine-covered mountain. It is sandy with crystal clear waters.
- Selenia: the beautiful sandy beach of the homonymous picturesque settlement in the eastern part of the island.Organized and quite quiet.
- Kanakia: accessible via a path through the forest, which is also suitable for cycling. One of the cleanest beaches of the island, overlooking Aegina. It is located in the southwestern part of Salamis.
- Psili Ammos: it is organized and has shallow waters that make it an ideal choice for families with children. It is located on the north side of the island.
At the island you will find important archaeological sites and monuments from prehistoric times to the Greek Revolution.
We suggest you to visit:
- The pre-Homeric city of ancient Salamis
- The archaeological museum of Salamis
- The churches of Agios Minas and Agios Dimitrios, with creations by Giannoulis Halepas
- The cave of Euripides
- The open theater of Euripides
- The windmills on the hill of Agios Nikolaos
- The little stone theater
In Salamina you will also find many hiking trails, many of which lead to archaeological sites and other places of recreation. In spring especially, it is worth walking along the beaches and forests of the island to discover interesting species of animals and plants, such as rare birds.
Tip: if you are a fan of diving, Salamina has a diving center, the Salamina Diving Center, which remains open all year round.
Nightlife in Salamis is generally lively. On the island you will find several beach cafes to enjoy your coffee or drink next to the sea. In addition, you will drink ouzo with grilled seafood in the taverns and taverns of the city of Salamina, but also in Selenia, Aianteio and Kaki Vigla.
On the island there are several bars, mainly in the town of Salamina, to drink your drink and cocktail. If you are looking for wild entertainment until the morning, you will have a great time in the clubs of the island, such as Buka and Deep Nightclub, but also in shops with live music.
Getting Around:
The easiest way to reach Salamina at any time of the day is from the port of Perama in the Piraeus area. The route Perama - Salamina (Paloukia) runs 24/7 with departures every quarter, twenty minutes or half an hour. The boat trip takes just 15 minutes.
Within the city of Salamina it is quite easy to move around on foot as the distances are short. To move from one area of the island to another, you can use a taxi or bring your own vehicle to discover all its hidden corners.
An interesting alternative for your movement is a bicycle, which you can also use on the paths of the island, e.g. the green path Kanakia - Monastery of Agios Nikolaos.
