“Casa Amelia” gorgeous Antigua Guatemala, reduced prices due to a cancellation

Casa Amelia is a stunning Spanish colonial-style Antigua home, with all modern amenities and furnished completely as our second home. The lovely house, with indoor garden and covered patio, as well as roof terrace with views of the mountains, volcanoes, and old Spanish church/convent across the street, is cozy and comfortable, yet gives the impression of living in a centuries-old home.

It is literally a hand crafted house with the wood, iron and stone artistry that Antiguans have practiced for centuries. Three wood fireplaces, two in bedrooms, add to the ambiance. Three lovely bedrooms with private baths will sleep eight if including the day bed and extra mattress on the sleeping loft overlooking the living room. The "cupula" kitchen and vaulted ceiling dining room are special features that capture the charm of old Antigua.

our manager/housekeeper comes to keep the house in pristine condition. This wonderful "eternal spring" city, at an altitude of 5,000 feet, boosts of the world's best coffee grown on the skirts of its volcanoes. Antigua, a UNESCO monument of humanity since 1984, was preserved after it was abandoned following a 1773 earthquake and is full of ruins of churches, convents, monasteries, and lovely parks and fountains.

The cobble stone streets and old lighting add to the charm. Walk everywhere from our treed street situated within the 10 square block radius of the old city. We are in town, but "away" on the only tree-lined quiet street in town, 1/2 block from a lovely neighborhood park. Antigua has been largely restored in the last 4 decades, and boasts gourmet restaurants, spas, and fancy boutiques.

Spanish language schools abound and provide amazingly cheap and effective one-on-one Spanish instruction for the aspiring Spanish speaker. Stroll in the Central Plaza, shop in the huge artisan market where representatives of Guatemala's vibrant modern day Mayan population show off their wares, relax at sunset as the looming volcanoes fill with color or take day trips to nearby Mayan towns each featuring its special craft. Experiencing Antigua is a true adventure; it is ready to capture your imagination.

Amazing house in Antigua
We had a fantastic stay and I can't wait to stay at this property again! Well located in Antigua, easy access to everything in town but just far enough out of the center to be more quiet and relaxing. House is stunning and comfortable with everything needed for a great stay.

Beautiful home
Really comfortable beds. Lovely artwork throughout. The kitchen dining area was great. The fountain and sitting area in the center of the home was amazing and relaxing. Well appointed kitchen with spring water. Rooftop patio was a bonus. Bit of a walk to parque central but easy to get tuk-tuk. Local property manager was helpful. George was very responsive

House with character and charm!
This house was gorgeous! We loved the decor and the colonial style of the house. The central fountain garden was relaxing. House has good supply of towels, laundry, etc. the location is excellent and easy to walk around old Antigua. Also felt very safe. Parking right outside the property. WiFi equipped. We traveled with a 2 yr old and 5 yr old. The open stair case stressed my husband more than it did me. We moved the dining table against the stair case to break a fall just in case. There are 2 sets of stairs FYI in case you’re traveling w small kids. (My husband and I have different levels of risk aversion LOL). The only place my toddler fell was in the fountain. It wasn’t a big deal. We also moved the breakable nicknacks to higher level so the kids wouldn’t play w them. House would be great for families probably with older kids. We still loved it!!

Nice enough house, but not what we expected from the pictures
Let me first say that we had an enjoyable stay, that the housekeeper was extremely friendly and very efficient, and that the house IS nice, although a little cramped for 6 adults. I was really very glad I didn't invite two more friends. A lot of rooms were crammed into a 1600 square feet space, so the house is like a half scale version of the old Antigua Colonial Houses we had stayed at before over the years. The confusion is partly my fault, I should have read the description more carefully. But mostly, what fooled me was the juxtaposition of the first two pictures. The first is a tight shot of the corner window and door of the actual house. The second is a wide shot of a beautiful street lined with old Colonial houses, showing on the extreme right a big white house with VERY SIMILAR corner windows and metal bars. The implication to me was that THAT was the house I was renting. It looked like any other big old Colonial house we had stayed at before, and that is what my wife and I expected. Therefore our disappointment with the small scale of the rooms. Also, the block around the corner is an empty lot closed with rusting corrugated iron sheets, and the block directly across the front door is the tall metal gate and wall of the large Santa Rosa compound. Clean, but not very charming. The neighboring houses are very basic and poor, the sidewalk is dirt, and full of motorcycles and old cars. Dont get me wrong, I spoke to the neighbors, they were very nice people, and we did not have any problems at all. That just wasn't quite the neighborhood we expected from that second picture. The rest of the street IS lined with flowering trees for a few blocks, and that made the 10 blocks or so walk to the Parque Central rather enjoyable. I was OK, I am accommodating, but I have to say my wife was very disappointed when she walked in the door, and made it clear to me she wished I had rented the same house as last year. Live and learn! I feel the juxtaposition of these first two pictures is intentionally deceiving. It DID deceived me, and completely changed my perception of the other pictures, making me envision a much larger house with a big patio and large terrasses on the roof. That second picture should DEFINITELY be removed, and replaced with one showing the actual street. That would be more honest and accurate. I actually have a very good panorama of the whole neighborhood I would gladly include here and share, but VRBO doesn't offer me that possibility...

I really wanted to like it but...
My wife, three children and I stayed at this property for about a week out of our month long stay in Antigua for Spanish School. Out of the four places we stayed this was our least favorite. It’s proximity to the central part of Antigua is good, but it is directly across the street from an abandoned lot that doesn’t give the feel of safety. In the other direction are the ruins of a church which are unbelievably beautiful but is also the place where events are held. For the Friday and Saturday of our stay, the blaring music from a couple weddings was going until the wee hours of the morning. Pair this with drunk people shooting off fireworks literally 10 feet from the bedroom window...there was not much sleep going on. Outside the front door of the house smelled of urine the whole time we were there most likely due to the location a few houses down from a hostal and at the end of a street. To her credit the property manager tried to clean it and wash it, but it really didn’t help much. In the kitchen, there was no dishwasher as noted in the description of the property, only a hole where one must have been. The last couple days we were there the property manager also had to come and spray for cockroaches as the day before we had killed four of then and my kids wouldn’t sleep without the light on at night.

Lovely home in antigua
This is a lovely home in a great location in Antigua. The pros: location is great, on a quiet corner but just a 10-15 minute walk to so many of the sights, shops and restaurants. Home set up is flexible with two queen bedrooms, a bedroom with 2 twins, and a loft short twin bed. Furnishings are lovely in a rustic guatemalan style. The next door neighbor, Angela, is super lovely and helpful and accessible. The courtyard and upstairs patios are great for hanging out. Wifi works well. Plenty of hot water. The cons: communication with owner was difficult. I understand his mother used to manage the place and she passed away recently, so it is in his charge now, but he never responded to any of my messages months before our trip or to questions, nor checked in at any time. The home was not stocked at all (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, oil, salt, sugar, tin foil, etc had to be purchased). There were no useful spices. Beds were well used, ok for myself and the kids, but really uncomfortable for my husband who has back problems. The washer works fine (no detergent available) but the dryer was terrible and took 3-4 cycles to dry a reasonably small load. The set up is such that the house has two wings, the doors each lock from the inside , but since we had kids sleeping in both wings, we had to keep the doors unlocked all night- still felt safe (patio has a high wall) but would not be ideal if you would feel uncomfortable doing so youself. The city itself felt very safe.

Very lovely house in a great area of Antigua!
Overall very well eqipped house with a few exceptions like only 4 teaspoons, one sauce pan, but 6 fry pans. Also the coffee maker leaks all over when you try to pour it.Had trouble with both washer and dryer while we were there but managers called for a repairman immediately. We found that the floors seemed very dirty even right after the young girl supposedly cleaned the house. The managers were very accommodating whenever we needed more drinking water though.

Lovely home full of Guatemalan art and culture; Great location & spacious for a family!
We really enjoyed staying here for 2 weeks. Owners communicated with us in advance and during the stay. The local contacts were friendly and responsive. Lovely Guatemalan art, great bookshelf, convenient location for a bit of privacy but easy access to the city. Would definitely recommend to others.

Perfect location and hospitable town!
We enjoyed our 2-week stay at Casa Amelia very much. The neighbors/caretakers gave us helpful tips (including attending a 10 am mass on Sunday at Santa Domingo, just around the corner - one of the most spectacular settings for a church service we have experienced). We enjoyed walking to everything and taking a different route home each time. Our girls (6 and 10) had a terrific experience studying for a week at the Spanish school Don Pedro Alvarado. Internet in the house was reliable/fast enough for me to work on my laptop when needed. Cooking was a pleasure in the fully equipped kitchen - we cooked a full thanksgiving feast. Our only issue during the stay was that during our second night in the house (a Thursday), there was a long series of explosions in the streets just outside. It really put us on edge, until we leaned from the neighbor in the morning that they had just been fireworks, probably related to multiple weddings (although what was odd was that it was completely silent except for the fireworks...). In fact, we heard fireworks on most of the remaining nights we were there - so in the hopes of saving others worry, we wanted to mention it. Once we knew what it was, it just added to the ambiance. Thanks for a terrific vacation!

We were 6 adults and three middle age couples who enjoyed our stay in Casa Amelia. The description of the house was correct and we loved the quiet but central location. we had positive communications with the gracious owners (from the US) We cooked and ate in often, enjoying the well equipped kitchen and lovely dining area. The house had a lot of character and we enjoyed the library as well. Would the broken wicker furniture on the patio upstairs be replaced- it would be perfect. This was a minor problem. We loved the house and liked the guardians (next door) who were helpful. we hope to return for maybe longer next winter. Thank you!!

Perfect Location
Located on the most beautiful street in Antigua, and just a stroll to Parque Central. We spent 2 weeks enjoying this beautiful home. We are a group of volunteers working with The God's Child Project, and we loved coming home to this home with everything we could have wished for. The full moon was incredible from the roof top patio, and quiet morning coffee in the fountain courtyard. We ate in more than out because the huge kitchen and dining room were so well equipped and we could enjoy our evenings as a group at home. We loved that each bedroom had it's own bathroom, and there was a large bright loft area as well. When we did go out to eat, it was just a short stroll to Hector's (our favourite place) Also, the day spa and gym was only a few blocks away. We were so delighted when we went through the door into this home, as pictures never do justice to just how truly special it is. Thank you Gerri for the use of your exceptional home! I love Antigua, and expect to be back every year.

8 Weeks in Casa Amelia
We spent the last 8 weeks at Casa Amelia and had a lovely time. This home is very nice and has all of the modern conveniences anyone could wish for. We had more than enough room for our family of 4 and the home could very easily accommodate two families. I really liked that my kids were sleeping in the room directly above me and I could hear them if need be. Often colonial houses are spread out making it difficult to hear little ones. We fell in love with the location as it is close to everything. We walked everywhere in the city and only took a tuk tuk home in the evening when it was late. This home is in a very nice part of town with restaurants, tiendas and bakeries nearby (the main grocery is on the other side of town, but still an easy walk). A real highlight for us is that there is a bi-lingual Montessori school (Oxford) just across the street. They have a very flexible enrollment and take pre-school kids through age 10. Additionally very near is a great Gym for working out (La Fabrica) and a wonderful Spanish school ( Sevilla) all within a 5-8 minute walk ( both off of 1st avenida). While the home is not in a gated community we always felt very safe and comfortable coming and going. The neighbors and the house ladies who live next door and look after the home were super helpful as are the owners of this home who live in the US. They were more than accommodating and helped to make our visit wonderful. Antigua is a lively little city, so there will be some city noise. Buses, people, cars, firecrackers and sirens are a common occurrence. For us it was all a part of the Central American charm. This is a great place to make a home base to explore the region and get a real feel for the culture.

Great stay in Antigua!
Excellent location, in the Northeast corner of Antigua. Can walk to everything, but not too close to the traffic and busy-ness of Central Park. Excellent facilities -- beautiful bathrooms, clean water, great roof deck! Beautiful furnishings and good living space, convenient details including fans in the bedrooms, hairdryers, enough pillows...etc. Excellent help -- from booking with the owner, Gerri to checking in with Sra. Pilar -- all a positive and professional experience. Our family of 5 (three teenage daughters and my husband and I) enjoyed this house and Antigua very much! Highly recommend renting this lovely home in a quiet neighborhood.

Perfect!!
Our family of four plus our two elderly parents traveled with us to Antigua to experience the wonder and beauty of Semana Santos. Casa Amelia was perfect in every way for us! The home was beautifully furnished, clean, well equipped and very comfortable for all of us. (Two bedrooms on the ground floor made it easy for our octogenarian mothers to navigate without stairs.) The home is in a quiet area of Antigua that felt very safe to us all. The caretaker of the house lives next door and was very helpful and friendly. She invited us to help her family with the making of the colored sawdust rug for the Holy week processions - this was a real treat! The owner, Geri, went out of her way to provide recommendations and tips for making our stay in Antigua a great one. She is a true pleasure to deal with. We'd stay in Casa Amelia again in heartbeat!! and recommend it to others without reservation!!

Wonderful Casa Amelia
My husband and I came to La Antigua for a month of relaxation and were more than happy to have chosen Casa Amelia for our stay. The city is wonderful of course, with many high quality restaurants within a few blocks, with great food and low prices. The markets and chicken buses were fun and we didn't really want for anything. We used Casa Amelia as a home base and travelled out from there. After a day of exploring this beautiful country and meeting it's wonderful people, it was so nice to come home to this lovely house. It has so many areas for relaxing and entertaining, all the comforts of home in a quiet, safe neighborhood. The roof garden was lovely for a sunset glass of wine and the courtyard was the best place for relaxing after dinner. We would most definitely recommend this house to anyone visiting La Antigua. Just the place to kick back after a day of adventuring in beautiful Guatemala!

Excellent Stay!
First, it was very easy to set up and deal with owner. I really loved that there was a number for them here in US. I am very grateful on how flexible they were about our arrival time and departure. It made everything much smoother for our travel to our next destination. Thanks for that. The house was perfectly located; a beautiful walk down tree lined streets to central park for a coffee or dinner. Close to bank and other needs. To begin it was on the corner of a quiet street with the Ruins of a Santa Rosa right across the street. It was lovely at night because it was lit up and could see it from living room. The house itself was beautifully appointed. It had two wings and a central court yard that was so serene and relaxing with a beautiful fountain. The kitchen was equipped with all the comforts of an american home including dishwasher. The bedrooms were very nice as well. It was nice to have multiple bathrooms to share with visitors. If I go back, I would not stay anywhere else because I was spoiled by this beautiful home. There are two bakeries within a few yards and it is right by Casa Santo Domningo with the best restaurant in Guatemala for 3 years in a row and a 5 star spa to get your massage. Loved it!

Character, charm and comfort!
Casa Amelia provided a unique blend of character, charm and comfort that was so befitting of this captivating city and country. We had all of the comforts of home--fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, good showers, TV and Internet--in a setting that we could never find at home. Talk about architectural interest and charm! What could be more wonderful--and unexpected--than eating breakfast in the landscaped central courtyard or climbing up to the loft to curl up for some quiet time alone? (The photos don't do it justice.) Casa Amelia had everything we needed to ease our tired bodies while lifting our spirits with its charm. It was the perfect launching pad for spending hours and dollars at the Indian market, exploring volcanoes, climbing ruins and strolling through unexpected art galleries. The owners clearly know and love Antigua and helped us explore beyond the travel guides, dine at good restaurants and even find a cobbler to fix a broken heel. My time in Antigua was all too short and I hope to return for a longer visit and stay at Casa Amelia.
