On first impression, we started off not great as there was a mixup. If you bring a dog you MUST book a dog friendly room - not just let them know a few days before as they won’t let you bring your dog if a dog-friendly room isn’t free.
They were willing to discuss which I appreciated but I still couldn’t bring my dog.
The room I got, was the one above the kitchen, which meant between 8pm and 11pm I smelled cigarette smoke from staff and heard conversation outside. We reported this to manager and his first comment was to speak with staff. It didn’t work as it happened again the second night. My husband went downstairs to tell reception again and it finally stopped and didn’t continue the last day we were there. They offered a complimentary drink in our room, which was kind and thoughtful.
So all in all - I appreciated the responsiveness after our pushing, but I think the staff need some training on courtesies regarding noise and smoke given the kitchen is below one guest room.
Otherwise the amenities were very nice. Last comment. Go for the full English at breakfast for a substantive meal, otherwise the portions strangely give you ‘military rations’ vibes (I.e. bland handful of green peas atop dry toast with poached eggs - strange item?). Anyway - all in all favorite was the spa facilities and the location in Grasmere. Thanks for a pretty much pleasant experience.
Lovely hotel. Great stay. Lovely spa. Staff polite and welcoming. Will be back.

Liked: Staff & service
The ‘deluxe’ room was not what we expected. We had issues to be sorted from the minute we arrived in our room. Needed to ask for an extra table lamp in order to use the desk in a dark corner. Toilet was permanently flushing causing noise and wasting water. Television needed connecting properly so no television for our first evening. Bathroom was very grubby. Wash hand basin tap came off showering the whole bathroom. Noise during night sounding like a pump which disturbed our sleep. Finally, not impressed with breakfasts. Had to ask for bananas each day. Had to ask for honey. Choices were very limited.
Nice stay in well located hotel. Staff were friendly and efficient. Room was clean and adequately spacious with a small balcony. Enjoyed the lovely wee spa. Thought the parking charge for residents was an unnecessary at the price but otherwise very happy with everything. Breakfast was good too.

Liked: Cleanliness, room comfort
Disappointed, won’t return
Disappointed with room. Located in roof with small windows , no balcony
Spa facilities very poor, aromatherapy steam room and hydro pool not working !!
A lovely quiet location, picturesque gardens and nice spacious room. As this is a 4 star hotel we had high expectations. Some things a bit surprisingly is the £10 per day parking, part of the spa facilities not working (aromatherapy room) and some of the drink and food prices were eye watering. We had a meal in the restaurant and we were still hungry. The room also missed a condom wrapper when cleaning! The customer service was really good, nice food and drink just overpriced. The gardens are lovely to sit in and the spa is relaxing just on the small side.
On arrival the hotel looked great, friedly staff on the desk.
Overall we had a lovely stay. We had two rooms and the double overlooking the river behind was idyllic.
Downsides:
* Noise from the room above - the residents weren't crashing about but you could hear every footstep, loudly when they were in the bathroom.
* Spa - whilst a lovely pool overlooking the scenery, both the aromatherapy room and sauna were out of order during our stay.
* Surprised a little that residents were charged for parking although in retrospect can see "Self parking fee" (what other type of parking is there?) in the property info.
Lovely, friendly staff and lovely room with balcony overlooking the river . We spent the first two nights of our honeymoon there. It was just a shame the spa bath in our room didn't work and we didn't get anything extra to acknowledge our recent wedding. However we still had a great time and will definitely return.
First time stay and we loved Grasmere. Problems in the restaurant on the first two of our four night stay. We dined out the other 2. Room size, location and setting excellent and staff were great. But, oh dear! The cleanliness!! Towels and linen were good but room doors and skirtings etc were grubby and worn. We are aware that Harbour Hotels have just taken over and that a refurb is about to get under way, so I am sure the shortfalls will be addressed.
