Although we love this beach, and the unit is lovely, clean, nice staff, we did not enjoy this stay. The simple reason is that the sargasso all along the Quintana Roo coastline is just god awful now. Although they say measures are being taken to control it, this is not really true.
We left 3 days early, after the piles along the beach grew to cover over half the bay, and the smelll began to permeate even the living room area. Outside on the delightful patio became impossible to enjoy. Going into the water became impossible except at the far north rocky end. The main part of the bay was by then covered with a layer of old sargasso floating just under the sea, extending out some 20M when we left. On top of this is the incoming green sargasso, forming an undulating carpet out from the shore for a good 10M, or more in some areas. People who came to look were just plain stunned, as we were by then.but as
We booked at the last minute, asking about the condition of the sargasso on this beach, and were told by the renting agency (which is not the owner) that it was a "good option." that the sargasso was "being removed each day" from this area.
Upon arrival it was clear this was not quite correct, but since we were then there, we decided to give it a go. We should not have stayed.
Although the staff did spray the sargasso the first couple of days with a chemical to eliminate the bacteria which causes the odor, no one removed, nor attempted to remove, any of it from the beach. (Yes, they raked under the beach chairs where there was little or nothing to remove, and added it to the pile on the beach). By the end of the second day, it got much worse, and so did the smell. We left on the 4th day, asking for a refund for the last three days, which the owners denied.
Two other properties further north did indeed remove the sargasso from in front of those properties each day, through a huge effort, but the whole beach needs to concentrate on this.
It is an absolute shame this is happening, and looks to continue. Incoming with the seaweed is also garbage: from various Carribean islands, added to the mess.
My question is WHY were we told that the seaweed was being removed every day? We should have been given a refund, or at the very least a credit to come back in future. Neither were granted. Beware of the REAL situation there before you book. It is very extensive all along this coast.
