Walking around the Alto Campo region means entering a land of history, mysticism and tradition. From the 12th century, with the reconquest of the Taifa kingdoms of Tortosa and Lérida by Count Ramon de Berenguer Iv, the so-called "new Catalonia" began to be dotted with medieval towns, fortifications and religious buildings, with the Cistercian monasteries standing out. Today we can make the Cistercian Route, which takes us, in the province of Lérida, to the Monastery of Santa María de Vallbona, in Urgel, and in the province of Tarragona, to the Monastery of Santa María de Poblet, in the Barberá Basin, and to the Monastery of Santes Creus, in Alto Campo.
The Alto Campo is also synonymous with vineyards, wineries and good wine, being a good starting point to know the Cathedrals of the Wine of Tarragona. These modernist wineries were built at the beginning of the 20th century in the rural areas of the province and are pieces of great architectural value. The Celler Cooperativo de Nulles is a good example, designed by Cèsar Martinell, the creator of most of these lay temples. And if you want to get to know the local culture and its most deeply rooted traditions, you are in the right place. In this region you will enjoy the calçots and the Castells.
To live all these experiences the best thing to do is to stay at Mas Vidal, a 12th century farmhouse in the heart of the Montmell mountain range, which separates the regions of Alto Campo and Bajo Penedés. It is surrounded by an enormous wooded area in the municipality of Aiguamúrcia, where the vines breathe the aroma of white pine, and in the distance you can see the Mediterranean.
With the base of the old farmhouse, Mas Vidal combines modernity and elegance in a magnificent construction of 4 double rooms type suite and private bathroom. With capacity for 8 people, which can be extended to 12 seats, it is ideal for a trip with family or friends, and rest in this haven of peace. The large interior lounge is a warm place and an exceptional meeting point, with comfortable sofas, fireplaces, dining room and a huge window that allows you to appreciate the impressive vineyard field. It also has a perfectly equipped kitchen, a terrace and a very cosy library located in the old tower, which has preserved its original classical features.
The estate is completed with another farmhouse, Les Comes, where the Inici wine, the star of the Clos Montblanc Wineries, is produced in a traditional and ecological way. The interior reveals an old mud-brick press in which the grapes are fermented without temperature control or additives, and then pressed as they have traditionally been. The small and exclusive production is then aged in French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, and is reserved each year for 2,500 lucky ones.
