Bricquebec-en-Cotentin (Manche) Le château médiéval de Bricquebec. L'imposant front sud avec le « bastion plat », la courtine et l'imposante tour de l'Epine. La tradition attribue la fondation du fort au viking Anslech*, au début du Xe siècle. Anslech serait à l'origine de la lignée des Bertran(d)* qui restera propriétaire de Bricquebec jusqu'au XIVe siècle. Par mariage, le château et la baronnie de Bricquebec passent à la famille Paisnel*, qui possédait aussi le château de Hambye (Manche). Par mariage,toujours, le domaine passera dans la famille d'Estouteville*. Donné par Henry V au Comte de Suffolk en 1418, il sera rendu en 1450 à Louis II d'Estouteville. Dans le second quart du XVIe siècle, les Estouteville, barons de Bricquebec abandonneront l’ancienne forteresse des Bertran pour s’établir dans le Château de Galleries, édifié à proximité, suivant les règles de la Renaissance italienne. Anslech dit Anslech de Bricquebec était un proche de Guillaume Longue-Epée. Guillaume Ier de Normandie Longue-Épée, est considéré par les historiens comme étant le deuxième duc de Normandie. Il est en réalité "jarl" des Normands de la Seine. Le jarl est l'équivalent du comte. En 940 Guillaume Longue-Epée, prêtera «hommage en marche» (seulement pour les terres frontalières) au roi carolingien Louis IV d’Outremer (roi des Francs). Après la mort de Guillaume Longue-Epée, assassiné à Picquigny (dans la Somme) en décembre 942, Anslech de Bricquebec fera partie du conseil de régence, le fils de Guillaume, Richard, n'ayant que dix ans. Dans la lignée des Bertran(d) : - Robert Ier de Bricquebec (1045-1082), dit "Robertus Tortus" (le "tordu": Bossu? Boiteux?) fait partie de ceux qui ont pris part à la conquête de l'Angleterre en 1066 (Chronique de Normandie, basée sur le Roman de Rou), aux côtés de Guillaume le Conquérant. - Robert II, fils du précédent, aurait participé à la prise de Jérusalem lors de la première croisade. Robert Bertrand IIème du nom, baron de Briquebec, fut tué en une rencontre dans un vallon près la rivière d'Orne en 1138, dans une bataille opposant les partisans de Mathilde et de Geoffroy Plantagenêt à ceux d'Etienne de Blois. - Robert IV Bertran de Bricquebec, signera en 1197 une alliance avec Richard Coeur de Lion contre le roi de France. Tous ses biens seront donc confisqués lors du rattachement de la Normandie au domaine royal français (1204) par Philippe Auguste. - Robert V Bertran de Bricquebec aurait rendu hommage au roi de France (1207). Il aurait participé à la bataille de Bouvines (1214) et accompagné le dauphin, futur Louis VIII, en Angleterre (les barons révoltés contre Jean-sans-Terre avaient proposé la couronne d'Angleterre au dauphin Louis). - Robert VII ou VIII (1273-1348), sera nommé maréchal de France en 1325. Il fera une carrière diplomatique et militaire sous Philippe V le Long, Charles IV le Bel, et Philippe VI de Valois. - Robert IX, fils du précédent, sera tué à la bataille de Crécy en 1346, son frère Guillaume Bertran sera tué dans la bataille de Mauron le 14 août 1352 (Chroniques des règnes de Jean II Charles V). Guillaume VI Paynel (mort en 1361), seigneur de Hambye, épouse vers 1340 (contrat de mariage du 2 juin 1338) Jeanne Bertrand dite l'Ainée, baronne de Bricquebec. Jeanne Paynel, dame de Hambye, Bricquebec, Moyon, Chantelou et Gacé épouse en 1414 Louis d'Estouteville, capitaine du Mont-Saint-Michel et qui sera sénéchal de Normandie.
