February 2016

Tábor, Czech republic

The old gothic council house (the tower and building on the left) from 16th century in the main Žižka's square of town Tábor.

The town was founded in 1420 by the most radical wing of Hussites, which became known as Taborites and it was an icon of egalitarian peasant commune for some 30 years. The name may come from the biblical Tabor hill and in Czech it means also a camp or military encampement.

The town today has population of ca. 50 thousand and it is a nice quiet place ca. 1 hour by car or train south of Prague
