In April 2001, Egyptian archaeologists uncovered 22 mummies in Bahariya, some 350 kilometres from Cairo. They date from the 6th century BC and were neatly divided into two tombs.
Shortly afterwards, during a journey through the White Desert, I was given the exceptional opportunity to descend with an Egyptian friend in one of the tombs. There I found this untouched sarcophagus of a mother with the mummy of her child on top of her.
(The necropolis in the Bahariya Valley, home to more than 230 mummies, was only discovered in 1999.) #Adventure #LocalSecrets #Trovember
